Official Announcements

(announcements may be made by the Mayor, Leader of the Council or the Chief Executive)

Minutes:

We are incredibly saddened to acknowledge the death of Bob Goldsworthy, who was a Councillor for 17 years, elected in 2007.

Councillor Goldsworthy worked in the engineering, constructing, and housing sectors, before pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Combined Studies in Cultural and Social Studies, and afterwards a Post-Graduate Diploma in Housing Management and Social Policy.

As a Councillor, Bob was the Chair of the Planning and Development Committee and a member of:

·         Care, Health and Wellbeing OSC;

·         Licensing Committee, and;

·         Regulatory Committee.

Councillor Goldsworthy entered politics because he believed that the people of Gateshead deserve the best possible public service provision and that this can only be achieved by getting involved in the decision-making process. His contributions and role as a Councillor have been appreciated by this Council, and we give him our thanks. We also share our sympathies with Councillor Maureen Goldsworthy, and Bob’s family and friends.

It is with sadness that I must also inform you that former Councillor and Alderman Malcolm Graham passed away on at the end of May.

Malcolm was elected to the High Fell ward in 1988 and served for 31 years until 2019.  Malcolm held the following roles at the Council:

·         Chair of Planning Committee – 1995 - 1999

·         Vice-Chair of Economic Development Committee – 1990 – 1995

·         Cabinet Member 2002 – 2016

·         Member of Executive Committee – 1999/2000/01/02

·         Member of Policy and Resources Committee – 1991 – 1999

Following his retirement from the Council, Malcolm was made an Honorary Alderman in 2023.

The Mayor announced that within the King’s Birthday Honours List 2023 the following people were recognised who live and work within the Borough:

·         Vanessa Graham, Head of Commercial Development for the Labour Party, was awarded an MBE for political and public service.

·         Jennifer Hartley, Head of Economic Development at Newcastle City Council, has been awarded an MBE for services to businesses and trade.
