Apart from 9 years, I have always lived in Wrekenton. I have been active in the community all my adult life, through the Boys' Brigade based at Wrekenton Methodist Church, having been a member of the 3rd Gateshead BB since the age of 8, and through my membership of Wrekenton Methodist Church, which provides a host of activities for all ages of the community including Guides and Brownies. The BB and Guides provide extensive programmes of activities that cover an educational, spiritual and physical nature. I would recommend to every parent, to encourage their children to try out the BB and Guides.
I served an engineering apprenticeship at Clarke Chapmans, Gateshead. Threat of redundancy forced a career change into financial services. In 1991 I became a full time mature student, studying Politics at the University of Durham which I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend to anyone over 30 years of age who is thinking about returning to study. After University I lectured at Northumbria University and New College, Durham before taking up a Commercial Management position in BT. I have recently completed my Post Graduate Certificate in Education to teach Citizenship in secondary education.
As a local Councillor serving the people of Chowdene I am able to continue my community involvement on a political front. My interest in politics began as a young teenager when I successfully negotiated a pay rise for my fellow newspaper lads. I was elected in a by-election to Gateshead Council in June 2001.
I am Chair of Governors at Harlow Green Community Primary School.
I represent Gateshead Council on the following bodies.
· Allerdene Community Association
· WING (Wayout in Gateshead)
· Boys' Brigade
My other interests are as follows. I am a member of Wrekenton Methodist Church and currently training to be a Methodist Lay Preacher.I am a member of Saltwell Harriers running as many races as I can on the Road, Cross Country, Fell and Mountain Marathons (see KIMM). Fell Running is my preferred type of running, which enabled me to become a member of the Bob Graham Club. I enjoy most mountain pursuits.
