I was elected to the Council in May 2010. I live in Lockhaugh which is part of the Winlaton and High Spen ward and am married with a son and daughter. I have lived in Gateshead since 1985 and have always enjoyed taking part in the Borough's arts and music events with my family. I love walking in the countryside, travelling, playing music and spending time with family and friends.
I became a Councillor because I have always liked being involved with people and helping them work together to create good communities. Most of my working life has been spent in community development, helping people to set up community groups and tackle issues which affect their lives. I have worked in local government, for charities and also as a volunteer in local groups.
I have been active in the Community Health Council, Well Women campaigns and in the Women's Aid movement, helping to found Washington Women in Need. I think that good health and access to excellent health services are a priority for us all.
I was a UNISON shop steward at work, am a lifelong trade union member and an active member of the Labour Party. As a Councillor I will do everything I can to help local residents resolve their concerns. I will represent residents' interests to the best of my ability.
Since becoming a Councillor I have been appointed to the management committees of the Winlaton Centre and Winlaton Mill Village Hall. I sit on the Regulatory Committee and on the Overview and Scrutiny Committees for Children and Young People and Sustainable Communities People. I am also a Board Member of Equal Arts charity.
As a resident I have always been impressed by how well this council is run. As a Councillor I will always do my best to make sure that Gateshead continues to be an excellent place to live for all residents.
